Oops: A UK retailer listed the new generation of Kindle e-readers this week, which probably came as a surprise to Amazon, seeing as the company has yet to announce them. The 12th-gen entry-level Kindle and the new Kindle Kids Edition appeared on the website, both of which have since been removed.
John Lewis, a UK department store that sells pretty much everything, prematurely listed the Kindle e-readers along with their specs.
Good Ereader and The Verge grabbed several screenshots of the unreleased Kindles before the listings were deleted. The entry-level device comes with a six-inch, 300ppi, glare-free E Ink screen, along with 16GB of storage and a longer battery life than its predecessor – you'll be able to go for up to six weeks without needing to recharge, apparently.
The new Kindle also offers a 25% brighter front light at max setting, a higher contrast ratio, and faster page turn than the previous generation. It's said to be the lightest and most compact Amazon Kindle ever made.
There's a new dark mode in the 12th-gen Kindle that makes reading in the dark easier on the eyes. You can also use Audible to listen to audiobooks through Bluetooth-connected headphones or speakers.
One thing that is missing is the color temperature adjustments on the Kindle's front light, which is a feature of the Kindle Paperwhite and more expensive E Ink devices, notes The Verge.
John Lewis also posted a listing for the 12th-gen Amazon Kindle Kids Edition. It has the exact same specs as the entry-level version, with the only difference being the inclusion of a colorful case, an extended two-year warranty, and six-month subscription to Amazon Kids+ (formerly Fire for Kids). That's six months less than previous Kids Edition Kindles – you'll need to pay to continue the subscription after the six-month free period, at $6 per month for Amazon Prime members or $8 for non-members.
John Lewis listed the new Amazon Kindle for £94.99, which is around $124. The Kids Edition costs slightly more at £115, which is about $150.
