The Best 4K Gaming Monitors: Starting at Just $400

I just find it hilarious that people think 4K is the way to game. 1440p is easily the king, because you it's plenty good of a resolution and since you're powering 1/4 the pixels, your GPU can be used for important stuff like AO, Shaders, RT and the like. Those that say pixel count is better don't have a clue.

I find it pretty ridiculous that you think 1440p is 1/4th of the pixels of 4k, that's 1080p you are thinking about, also 1440p is not that much better than 1080p on a 27" screen, there is no comparison to 4k that just looks better in every way, and now when 4k 240hz screens are widely available for a reasonable price I don't see the point in 1440p (yes 1440p used to be cool in 2015) but come on man get with the times, only downside is your hardware has to be pretty decent to run 4k with high refreshrates but if u wanna run games on a very low budget system sure 1080p/1440p might still have their place, but if you talk about the general experience and picture quality 4k or go home

I mean if you don't have the eyes to actually see any difference, fine, but that won't make those that do *****s.

1440p is only 78% more pixels, while 2160p is 300% more. It's incomparable. 1440p is just as useless of a stopgap as 720p was. If you want performance, go for 1080p. If you want fidelity, go 2160p. 1440p will give you neither, a worst of both worlds, with horrible scaling issues due to the fractional increase involved.

Like the RTX 4090 can drive a UE5 game native at more than 60 fps.
Yes the 4k diplays are more affordable, but the GPU's?

Except...long term OLED burn-in is still a thing..regardless of the current mitigations. And the current crop of IPS/VA monitors are pretty sucky for image quality..or forcing you into a curved screen. bleh.

I upgraded from a 1440 144Hz to the LG 27GR93U. The difference was stunning. And if a game is too demanding for my lowly mid range gpu, I can drop the resolution to 1080 and it still looks great with the 1:4 pixel ratio and the 27” panel’s pixel density.

The absolute top today is Dell UltraSharp U4021QW. Nothing comes close to combining the best of everything. It is a 40" 5K@120Hz monitor, which works with everything, and perfect for both productivity and gaming. It is about $1,800.

4K looks amazingly sharp on a phone, amazing on a laptop, amazing on a monitor and even (again) amazing on a big TV. I have yet to see a 4K screen that looks worse than 1440p. It just looks very clear. Alll other displays look rather soft to me. Its even worse, ive been using a 4K screen since 2015. My eyes are soo used to it, when I use my 1440p screen.. it looks meh.

The problem is not 4K, its GPUs and prices. Also game engines. 4090 cant even do 60 fps in some games. Madness. This GPU in a console would do 700 fps for the same games. Cus devs optimize stuff for the hardware. On the PC, we have to brute force everything. Most cards cant even do native 1080 for many modern games. Its insane lol. DLSS and frame gens are the only way to do it. Sad.

Anyways. OLED burns, IPS sucks... so yeah. Ill keep using my old displays until they do something more interesting and longer lasting.

Registered just to say this. I've been waiting for A 27" 4K HRR OLED-type options for a few months while staring at my brother's 27" 1440p360Hz QDOLED. I'm greedy for pixels but I got space constraints, and I've got a Gigabyte M27U already.
Looking at the infos available, if something new is available in early 2025 (the video version of this article says 2025Q1), it would be Samsung's QDOLED panels, with LG's RGB (O?)LED without white LEDs available on Q4.
I probably would have gotten bored waiting and just grab a QDOLED, but I would like some speculations on what I would have missed on LG's RGB LED options. My guess is not much, as I don't play shooters and my eyes doesn't do well with 600cd/m2 brightness on the M27U (so dual mode and super high brightness is not useful), but would like some more opinions from more knowledgable people.

Side note: This could be a nitpick, but out of the 3 monitors I'm running, the M27U is by far the worst on rendering dark stuffs on SDR mode. And this have made me waiting more anxiously for the OLED options. (the others being AOC 24G2 and a very old ASUS 22" 1080p60)

4k is pleasant to look at. It is a nice visual upgrade. Everything, movies, pictures. I even look at the text, and it is joyful to read.

I got the same gigabyte monitor, and would not go OLED unless it is 4k. I do not want 2k after seeing 4k picture.

While not a monitor I got a G4 65 inch lg mla TV for $1999 this month. The picture quality is gorgeous subjectively speaking.

It's true but when the hardware capable of running games without upscaling catches up the display technology will be even more cheaper and affordable. This time next year I am hoping to see a flood of dp 2.1 monitors and 2 years from now I am hopeful AMD enters the enthusiast/ high end gpu market.
Notice Nvidia is not using the 9800X3D in thier slides while AMD is using the 4090 in thier 9800X3D promo performance slides.

I remember my gsync Asus 3440x1440p 100 hz ips monitor from 2015 it was the shyte!
Even my 4.5 year old 48 inch 4k oled is starting to show age but I'm still loving the picture quality. 😎

I have been checking this page every other day.

That means "standard" subpixel layout then? That's good to know.
Although my question is more of specs side, it's probably difficult to guess from now.

Samsung is continuing its panel lottery and now it's even in their top model.

Hoping LG and TLC bring some competition. We'll finally have the first full bandwidth DP2.1 video cards in January. I think that's why monitor makers didn't incorporate DP2.1 in 2024. They should have it in 2025. CES should shed some light.
