The Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) offers improved performance, a slightly tweaked design to prevent fingerprints spoiling the look, and lower price of entry compared to the previous model. This is easily the best laptop money can buy for most people, though we recommend boosting the memory and storage space when ordering. That makes it more expensive, but far more future-proof.
Our editors hand-pick related products using a variety of criteria: direct competitors targeting the same market segment, or devices that are similar in size, performance, or feature sets.
The MacBook Air is still one of the best laptops you can buy for general-purpose use, and since you can’t completely avoid Apple’s upgrade funnel, spending an extra $100 to get the M3 instead of the M2 is small potatoes compared to how far the upgrade funnel could take you. If you have an M1 Air or earlier and are fine giving up the wedge shape, you’re going to have a great time with the M3 Air, as long as you upgrade the memory.
While its predecessor was certainly a no-brainer—because of its overhaul on the inside and out—the M3-powered 13-inch MacBook Air isn't as simple a choice. We recommend it only if you're coming from a much older laptop, and also want the latest and greatest chip–that way, you'll actually be able to spot the difference in performance. Otherwise, the (now) more affordable M2 MacBook Air is still a safe bet.
If you want the smallest version of Apple’s laptop line, the 13- or 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 makes a lot of sense. You won’t be disappointed if you want to upgrade from the M1, especially the Intel-based MacBooks. If you’re thinking about upgrading from the M2, know you’ll be receiving what will virtually be the same machine, though with added dual-monitor connectivity, a slightly better battery, and slightly more power under the hood.
At first glance, it may seem odd that Apple is releasing the upgraded M3 MacBook Air lineup just nine months after the 15-inch M2 version was first unveiled at Apple WWDC in June 2023. But, this is a good thing. For the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models, this is an incremental upgrade that brings them up to date with the new M3 processors that Apple announced last fall and continues them on their trajectory to be more capable and more of the light professional-grade laptops that many people can use to handle all of their work.

The fact is, these are well-built, highly portable notebooks with great displays, performance, and battery life. Simply put, it delivers everything that most people would ever want and need from a notebook. Just make sure you upgrade its memory and storage.
The 2024 Apple MacBook Air 13-Inch shoehorns more performance into its slim chassis, and amps up the external-monitor support and gaming capability. It holds its own as the best ultraportable Mac.
Hands on: The MacBook Air 13-inch M3 shares most of the same features that made its predecessor so great — a vivid 13.6-inch display, a svelte modern design and four color options. That, along with the powerful M3 chip, which delivers strong performance for work, gaming and AI tasks, makes this notebook a winner.
Apple’s 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 both make excellent, familiar first impressions that really shine when you put them through your paces. Much like the experience of first using an M1 or M2 Mac, it makes macOS and the applications you depend on feel instant. Apps open quickly to where you don’t need to think about it, and I can comfortably make edits and export photos in mere seconds, as I did for this review.
