New Samsung ad mocks Apple (and its customers) over lack of foldable iPhones

What just happened? In a tradition going back many years, Samsung has once again created an ad that has the sole purpose of throwing shade at rival Apple. This time, it's Cupertino's lack of a foldable device that's primarily being mocked. And while it's long been rumored that a foldable iPhone is in development, it may not launch until 2027.

Samsung's 'Simon Says' advert begins with a jab at Apple's "think different" slogan, noting that the company doesn't like to think too different when it comes to the upgrades added to its latest iPhones. There are few differences between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15, but then many phone makers, including Samsung, often push out devices with incremental upgrades.

The ad also pokes fun at Apple users, suggesting they have a sheep mentality when it comes to buying Apple products, repeatedly upgrading even when the latest devices have almost no new features.

One area where Samsung can claim to be different from Apple, of course, is the Korean firm's foldable devices: the Z Fold and Z Flip.

The ad finishes with the line "Nobody should wait for innovation." The first Galaxy Fold – when it didn't have a Z in the name – launched late in 2019. It was delayed by months after reviewers with pre-release units found the screens were breaking due to debris making its way underneath the display via the center crease.

Reports of Apple working on a foldable iPhone go all the way back to 2018. But in June this year, market intelligence company TrendForce said a folding iPhone will probably not launch until 2027 at the earliest. Analyst firm Omdia recently repeated that release year in its own prediction. It believes there will be a 7.9-inch to 8.2-inch folding iPhone in 2027, and 13-inch and 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro models launched in 2029.

This is the second Apple-mocking ad from Samsung in six months. The backlash to Apple's ill-conceived iPad Pro ad in May that showed a giant press slowly lowering, crushing a number of musical instruments, classical sculptures, books, paints, games, cameras, and more, prompted an apology. The company also decided not to run the ad on TV.

It didn't take long for Samsung to capitalize on Apple's mistake. A few days later, the Galaxy-maker released "UnCrush," which you can see below.

Samsung's history of Apple-targeting ads include the advert deriding ten years of iPhones from 2017, which featured a reference to the still-controversial notch. There was also one for the Galaxy S3 from a few years earlier, and a whole series of ads taking aim at the iPhone 12 Pro Max's cameras. Google also got in on the act with several iPhone-mocking ads last year.

Who gives a monkey.
Had to buy a new phone, as my pixel didn't get the 4g voice update in NZ ( pixel not supported here ) - Could have side loaded the last international update , no way knowing if my telco who accept it as approved. They are dropping 3g end of year

Ended up getting a Samsung A55 for $285 with discounts - If I was an amex holder could have got it for $227

Didn't trade in Pixel still has unlimited photo storage .
I can see why Samsung sells a lot - if big sales . I get 4 OS android updates , 80% of flagship , 256Gb - SD card for $285 . Don't need fast gaming , AI extras, longer support better vs low outlay risk . Don't need fast charging , wireless charging - slightly better water protection, and brighter screen nice not essential , Cameras good enough, has big battery

Given that would have picked up a Pixel 9 with discounts if American

Yeah I think ostentatious display of wealth with phones is still a thing

This was about foldable phones. I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

About the stupidity of the advert - that is so much BS and that you can get a a very functional phone for not that much outlay.

That the advert appeals to people's need to preen

Even the article was really not about foldable phones as you assume

If could have been about any other Samsung supposedly improvement YOY
But what the diff S25 ultra vs S24 ultra , or iPhone 15 max vs iPhone 16 max or whatever they called

Mine was a social commentary phones are mostly commodities get of the hype train your old ones is now so so , you need the latest

All told using my boring personal story :) - and also a reflection why Samsung sells so many phones world wide .

The A55 has a SD card slot , not sure many flagship have them, so sometimes lose , so on the road I could take movies to cast to hotel TVs etc , or watch on the device for no outlay , as we all have SD cards laying around

Hey, if foldables are your thing, so be it. I don't care for them as of yet. Why? OVER PRICED.
WAY over priced.

They might cost more than you want to spend, but that doesn't make them overpriced. The engineering that went into them has a cost. If it takes a foldable design to finally remove the stupid notch or pill 2027 might be the year I upgrade my phone. I don't have enough interest in learning a new phone OS to do it.

Remember when Samsung mocked Apple for removing the headphone jack, then did the exact same thing? Remember when Apple stopped including a charger, and then Samsung did the exact same thing? There are plenty of other examples. Samsung has no room to mock apple. Also, foldables still have serious drawbacks.

This is coming from a guy who currently daily drives an S22 Ultra (work) and S24 Ultra (personal) and has owned many previous Samsung flagships. I was also an iPhone 3GS and iPhone 5 user back in the day.

The point of the poster is that you can get a very nice phone (with micro SD card expandability) for 1/5 the cost of your phones (or any iPhone). The fact that Apple and Samsung "borrow" from each others "miniscule" cost cutting measures was not the point. The A55 (and other members of the A-Series phones) is why Samsung sells more phones than any other vendor - not its' overpriced flagships or overpriced iPhones. The A55 is more than enough phone for 99% of users and everyone else is just buying them to show off the latest, greatest, most expensive tech that makes a social statement with few, if any, meaningful upgrades to its useability for most users. That was his point. I am on board with that as I used to (back in the day) upgrade my phone with a 2 year "contract" for only $200. Even though manufacturer's claimed this was not a viable business model we are right back at in with 24-36 month "free" financing that goes away if you don't pay off your phone before cancelling service.

This is incredibly rich from Samsung, they've released the same foldable for the last three years in a row with barely any innovation.

The Chinese manufacturers are light years ahead of them.

I do think it's fair to say that Apple are often late to the party. They then claim that whatever it is they're introducing is somehow innovative, new and exciting. It usually isn't. It's taken them over a decade to allow users to have icons in a random pattern on their homescreens. Woohoo! It'll probably take another decade to be able to choose whether to have 4, 5 or 6 icons across each row. It's frankly pathetic and as for sticking with a 60Hz screen on non-pro iPhones and iPads.😠 I own an iPhone 16 Pro by the way which I really enjoy but Apple are bloody annoying and Tim Apple needs a good slap!! (j/k) 🙄😆

Because I looked at Galaxy phone to buy , get random on reddit . Saw someone complaining going from flagship Samsung to iPhone was so limiting
Proviso was this person was more a power user and had changed all the settings to their liking.
They listed like 20 things they couldn't change for their liking

So my take is iPhone probably suits those more who just like standard de facto settings

they are going back to Samsung - they even prefered their Mac and iPad - Though for the pro vs Ultra pads seems very close and depends on what user will use it for

As a freedom loving hippy - I just find it strange people spend on much to be controlled and to feel safe. My take security is often an illusion and you are safe as you feel, with qualifications. Walking the mean streets at night absolutely drunk with gold bling dripping of you, is a bit silly

Given now 95% plus of people use PCs , phones for banking and the thousands of scary security failings. It seems most people still lose money solely from immediate family or social/phishing scams , Not from running an out of date device with no protections . yet to hear one mass event story of bank accounts being drained, Exception is crypto wallets , and think those attacks are targeted anyway

@ Samsung
New flash! Not everyone likes and wants foldable phones. Reality check for you.
@ Apple
Not everyone likes your overpriced crap either.

Both companies = clueless
