Forward-looking: Sony is said to be preparing for its return to the handheld gaming market with a device that could rival Nintendo and Valve's efforts. According to a new report, Sony's machine will be a portable console, similar to the Switch, and able to run PlayStation 5 games while on the go.

Sony will be building on the design of the PlayStation Portal device for its handheld console, according to Bloomberg. According to the publication's sources, the Portal, which launched only with the ability to stream games from a PS5 via Wi-Fi using Remote Play, was originally supposed to be a standalone system "like Valve's Steam Deck" before becoming a streaming device.

Bloomberg adds that Sony's handheld is still in development and likely years away from launch. The company might even abandon the plans before then.

The report lacks any other details, so we'll just have to speculate about whether Sony's handheld will only download titles or have physical games like the Switch, or be limited to the PS5's catalog or have exclusives. Moreover, will it be able to run games made for the PlayStation 6, which could be available by the time the device arrives? Specifications such as the resolution and hardware can only be guessed at right now, too.

It's not surprising to learn that Sony is developing a dedicated gaming handheld. Despite essentially being a controller with an 8-inch, 1080p secondary screen, the Portal has sold an estimated 420,000 and 630,000 units in the US, exceeding Sony's initial expectations. It was recently updated so PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can stream games from the cloud – they don't even need a PS5.

Based on the report, Sony seems to be trying to make a direct Switch, or Switch 2, competitor. Nintendo's handheld only arrived in 2017, yet the 146 million sales of its various iterations have pushed it to the third spot on the list of best-selling consoles of all time. Nintendo recently confirmed that the Switch 2 successor will feature backward compatibility with original Switch games and will support Switch Online titles. The next-gen machine is arriving sometime between January and April next year.

It's not just Sony that could be entering the handheld gaming market. Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, confirmed in a recent interview that the company is in the research and development phase of developing its own device and working on prototypes. With the launch several years away, we could eventually see a Microsoft vs. Sony vs. Nintendo war in the handheld console market.

I'm unfamilar with handheld market but I guess its big enough to warrant this type of competition. However when I'm traveling on business, have yet to see anyone sitting in the airport playing with a handheld... where are these consumers at? Their home? next to their PC and console ?

They're probably saving the battery on the handheld for the plane ride. I use mine mostly in bed or in the hotel

Sony's PSP and vita both suffered from a lack of first party titles. Sony shipped everything on the vita to third party studios.

Given the dire situation on PS5 for exclusives I cant see this going well.

If this were to bring back the scale and scope of smaller first party titles that would release for both this and the main system, I'd be all for it. Unfortunately, it sounds like this is not what they're going for. Not sure how well the battery life would be trying to play Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk for example.

For anything that could come close to 30 FPS, absolutely abysmal. PS5 pro already upscaled from 896p in "performance" mode and barely hits 50.

If this turns into a Microsoft vs. Sony vs. Nintendo handheld war, we better brace ourselves for exclusive ecosystems. Imagine needing three handhelds because Master Chief, Kratos, and Mario refuse to share the playground.

There is generally no competition with Nintendo, not because Nintendo is better, but the target audience are very different. Most people buying a Nintendo Switch for example accepts the lack of graphic and compute processing power, in exchange for more party, engaging and family friendly games. I won’t bother to buy a Switch to play something like Witcher 3 or Hogwarts Legacy. You need something like a Deck or Ally X to have the computing power and battery endurance instead. Having said that, I do feel that whatever that Microsoft and Sony are going to cook up are not going to be attractive since the likes of Ally X can play any Sony and Microsoft games. The former may have an exclusive period, but I think it will be cheaper to buy games on PC and not be locked to any specific gaming platforms.

Most people I know that own a switch also own a gaming PC. You buy switch for the first party games and for local coop gaming and party games. And the whole portability aspect.

Without exclusives, the consoles have 0 reason to exist. See also: xbox sales since PC got all their games.

Why would you buy any of their garbage handhelds if the steam deck exists and all the games are on all platforms?

It would be interesting to see how many games will be supported.
It is obvious that it would struggle with some demanding games just like other handhelds.
Or perhaps, they will do magic and with thew help of AI and a great loss of quality, the console will play every PS game.
